My Kindergartener is going to take the CoGAT soon. Does anyone know how age is broken down for scoring? Is a 5 yr old a 5 yr old or do they divide up the year for more specific scores, depending on when the test is given and the birth date. I know they do that for the WIPPSI.......

Would love some clarification is anyone knows.
    Thanks!

I could be wrong but my dd took them in 1st grade (the whole class did) and it is based on national scores by grade, not age).
Our school does them every other year, so 1st, then again in 3rd etc.

From what we were told, there are age and grade norms available and I believe that the age norms are only broken into 3 or 4 groupings at most. For instance, I believe that kids from age 7yrs0mo-7yrs2.9mos would be in the 7 yr norming group. Ages 7yrs3mos-7yrs5.9mos would be in with the 7yr3mos norms, 7yrs6mos-7yrs8.9mos would be in with 7yrs6mos, and kids from 7yrs9mos up to just before they turn 8 would be in the oldest 7yr norms group.

Depending on your school, they may look at age norms, grade norms, or both. The 10 yr old 3rd graders in dd#2's class were certainly aided in terms of the grade norms last year by being older than typical.

Ah, then I shall defer to Dottie who always knows more about assessments wink! My prior post was off by a bit, then. I do believe that was what my district told us, though. Maybe if the district scores them internally rather than sending them off to the publisher for scoring, they use rougher age norms than what is otherwise available or maybe I was just given bad info -- lol!

Ours was based on time of year grade scoring as well. We were spring testers and that is how they referenced it nationally.

I think there is some caution needed with the results of this test. I am far from an expert, but I have heard there is problems with the test and some question the results. It may be worth looking into if the results are important to you.

    Dottie care to comment?
