My DS9 is currently on his 3rd version of a game he invented called Draw wars. He draws all this weapons and charaters that have points and then they battle. The battle is done by taking turns drawing the objects and then some body loses. Well, I think this is cool in a way. It's a little hard for me to understand but I go along with his game. He doesn't seem to do well with explaining existing board games to others. I told him I'm not sure if he could sit down with another kid and do this.I always want to promote creative thinking. I feel a little like when I play I'm just going thru the motions and he tell me what to do. I do try to draw creative stuff.

Any thoughts on encouraging him to do something creative yet not so outthere that no one can do it with him. Maybe I'm overthinking this.

First, I'd like to say that this game sounds WONDERFUL, and a lot like something my ds9 would cook up. He is often devoting sheets and sheets to new clubs or games he's working on. They could really have a time together. A bit like Calvin Ball!

As far as being 'too out there', Draw Wars might be something that only kids who are confident about drawing would enjoy, but it could turn out to encourage other kids to draw more!

Ds enjoys dungeons and dragons, and I keep meaning to get a copy of pictionary, too because I think he'd enjoy it.
Lately he has been making drawings of various star wars ships and mounting them with small paper handles then giving them to the other kids to fly around during recess or at his after school program. He just started making these little hand held faces with big mouths that move, too. It seems the other kids are in to them...and he is certainly enjoying making them.

well My DS came home today and said he did his game with someone today at playground. He said, this guy knew what to do he remembered what to do from last year. I didn't even know he played this with someone before. I was wanting to help him to fit in with the other kids but he found his own way. Good for him.

dungeons and dragons, Calvin Ball - I will check into these. I know I have heard of these but not sure what they are. I have the feeling my DS is going to like those. Thanks for the tips. It helps me so much to know he is not the only one like this.

My DS is definitely a project loving kid and explores many versions of things. It's amazing. It would be great if he could get together with somebody who was in to this.

definitely try Pictionary. We play with out the timer and just have fun.

Boy, do I have a playing partner for him! My DS7 has a similar game, but less dependent on good drawing and not always dependent on another participant--he has "dot battles" in which he chooses two to three colors and draws a few actual weapons and "troops", but mostly just...dots. Dots congregated in specific ways so as to outflank or overwhelm the other enemy dots. It has become a daily activity, often covering 2-3 sheets of paper and always described in great narrative detail. I try to "get it", but the truth is I have no clue what on earth he's talking about during much of his excited explanation. smile

He and DD have their own version of Calvin Ball too. I am glad that *I* don't have to play it--and equally glad that they have so much fun with it!

I was a little overwhelmed with internet search on these. Can any offer a starting point with these?

    D & D Intro

Calvin Ball refers to the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip where the character Calvin (a little boy) invents a game with ever-changing, arcane rules.

For those who like ever-changing rules, try the card game Fluxx.
