All boarding schools specialize in different things. Some are aimed at kids who are discipline problems. Some are aimed at kid who want to go to college (often very competitive colleges.)

No not all college prep schools are boarding schools. Columbia started a prep school. Now it is a stand alone private school. And some do not have prep in the title. Roxbury Latin in Boston or Trinity, Dalton etc in NYC. They are highly competitive. There are some private schools.

I believe most college prep schools are day schools that do not have college preparatory in the title although it is usually included somewhere in the first paragraph under description or accreditation.

They are in every large city. Some are far more competitive, but generally, they accept kids from the top quartile on standardized test at minimum.

As to who attends, people as diverse as Barack Obama and George Bush. My sons school has many international students, mostly from South Korea.

Most teachers have graduate degrees or higher in the subject they instruct and are not shy about assigning homework.
