They did not feel it was Asperger's but I have done some reading and there are many aspects that fit as well as many that don't.

I am happy to see you mention social training because that is what I am trying to locate or arrange for him. In the meantime, I told him to imagine each child has an invisible hoolahoop around them and not to go inside it!

If you don't mind my asking what were the issues that brought you to seek help for your son?

Here are a couple of threads to look at, Breakaway4 - we have a similar situation with our ds8 and actually start his SST group this evening. There is a kid's group and a parent's group, and we might try something with the school in the fall also, to just approach the issue from as many angles as possible. For our ds, it is really messing with his self-esteem and happiness.

Thanks Chris. I see I am going to have to do some research on what is available around here. We are pretty rural and therefore opportunities are limited. At times it is so bad I want to pull him out of school but eventually he has to learn the "Rules of Engagement" in social settings. Hopefully things will improve now so that by the time puberty and all the intense peer issues arise he is better prepared! Nice to know (since joining these discussions) that we are not alone.

    Chris,
That book sounds great. Thanks for the link.

Breakaway, I moved my son to a new school because of issues with his old one. He agreed to the move and was looking forward to it, but the transition was really large, and he acted up considerably the first few months of school. I don't think I would ever have really considered him having Aspeger's except that in that situation, his reactions were all there: sensory issues, not verbalizing when upset, social issues, etc. After a few months, things calmed down and he began to act more like the child I know, but I was left with an understanding of what parts of his personality are clues to his Aspeger's. Still, it took a while to be convinced, because I had not seen this behavior in him in years. It took the large transition for me to be able to pinpoint the daily things that he does that marks him as needing the support.
