Does anyone know of any psychologist outside of school system within NYC area who gives the RIAS IQ Test.

    Info would be greatly appreciated.

Hope that helps you worry a little less. wink
Although it was clear when I got home today that dd is sick (warm, stuffy nose, woozy feeling head), so I don't know that I'll expect too much from the SB #s. Perhaps she took longer due to being foggy. Dh, who was in charge of kids today, isn't as clued in to sick kid things, so he didn't mention it when I spoke with him earlier re how the day went.

Oh well, at least she wasn't ill on the day she took the WISC, so btwn the two we should have some idea of where she falls. I'm hoping more than anything to get out of this testing whether the prior WISC #s were accurate and whether she has any 2E things going on.

I haven't figured out the multiple quote thing here yet, so I'm responding to your post separately from the prior one. I'm not in NYC, so I probably won't be tons of help, but have you checked on Hoagies or Mensa's Psysource (I think that's what it is called)? Both could at least give you referrals to psychs w/ experience testing gifted kids and you could check to see if they administer the RIAS.

Why are you wanting that specific test? Also, it may be semantics, but I don't believe that the RIAS is technically an IQ test, although I could be wrong. It is an ability test, but more in line with things like the CogAT or Raven's progressive matrices (group ability tests) -- at least that's my understanding.

My kids were administered the RIAS test by the school so I researched it. The RIAS is a full-scale IQ test with a ceiling of 160 for ages 3 to 14.

Hmm, sorry about that! I was going off of our original conversation with the psych who is testing dd. When I suggested the SB-V, she felt that it wasn't necessary to do two IQ tests and that the WISC-IV alone should give us the IQ score with the RIAS giving us more info on her visual spatial abilities. The way she phrased that left me feeling that the RIAS was not an IQ test since we didn't need "two IQ tests." Also, the manufacturer says it takes something like 35 mins to administer and the psych dd is testing with mentioned something like 20 mins. I guess that, too, led me to believe that such an abbreviated test wouldn't provide a full scale IQ.

That aside, she apparently opted to go with the SB anyway, although I don't know for sure. I guess that I'll get some clarity on that when dd goes in for the final session or when we meet for the post testing report. Dd just thought that the SB was what she took today and she described a block tapping test that sounded like something from the SB from what I understand is included in that test.

Thanks for the info, cricket. If anyone else has some info regarding NY testing, it would be great.

    Thanks.

The RIAS is considered an IQ test - I kept reading the same comment about the 20-30 minutes to give the test - and then I found out that there are 2 different assessments....the RIAS - Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales and then the Reynolds Intellectual Screening Test (RIST - which is only a few components found in the RIAS)....my son took almost 2 hours to take the RIAS and that was with one break.

That's probably b/c the manufacturer says on their website that the RIAS is a 30-35 minute test: http://www3.parinc.com/products/product.aspx?Productid=RIAS

They list the RIST at taking 10-15 minutes: http://www3.parinc.com/products/product.aspx?Productid=RIST

Maybe they are testing some kids who miss a lot of questions and are done quickly?

My ds was administered the RIAS too through the school and also hit the ceiling for composite IQ. I was told by the GT teacher at the time that this is a very accurate test. Yet, the YS program doesn't accept the score. Private testing to have the SB-V or SB-LM is expensive. Is it necessary? Is the RIAS less accurate than I have been led to believe?

I might be able to get the WJ at school. I am in the process of moving to a new school for the fall. It seems to be a very gifted friendly school. The new principal has been a GT educator for over 10 years and seems very willing to address the needs of these students. I can check with the new principal and perhaps ds can be tested in the fall by the school psychologist. Thanks for the response. The RIAS test was given about 2/2008. Do you think that would be a problem for DYS?
