I think that it depends on the individual. My older one is looking at liberal arts schools, as he is better at humanities courses and wants a smaller school. My younger one will probably look at a larger state school, as she is much stronger in math and science and hopes to go to graduate school (which will have more costs).
When I looked at schools, I knew that I liked both and was strong in both, so I chose a small liberal arts school with a strong science program (lots of research opportunities) and an honors program in humanities... It does take some looking, though.

I went to a VERY small, VERY liberal college my freshman year. I loved it. I loved the writing requirements, the thought provoked classes, everything! I then went to what I would call traditional schools (2 of them, graduating from the 3rd), and I was completely bored. I stopped going to the first one b/c I lost part of my scholarship due to getting a C in Calculus. My intent was never to go anywhere with math, but due to a placement test, it was urged for me to take calculus instead of just the require algebra (I didn't take math my last two years in high school b/c I finished the college prep requirements in 10th grade, another dumb move on my part). I wish I would've taken the algebra instead because I would've really enjoyed staying there (I couldn't afford the $17k tuition without the scholarship(s)).

I'm an extrovert, just for the record.
