    OHGrandma,

I happened to look at this old post. I was wondering how he did with the derby and the explore test. I think you were very right to consider his needs in relation to the test.

The derby has been a big deal in our family. My son's cousin won 2 yrs in a row. His Dad passed on some info the my DH and my son won 2 yrs in a row and placing in top5 last year. It's a big deal and lots of fun.

Hey, this reminds me of a funny story...this is our first year with ds9 as a scout, and he is very much looking forward to the derby. I am apparently the den leader (not sure how that happened) so at one of the leader meetings we were discussing advancement requirements, etc., and I said something about how cool it is that the derby should help the kids cover some of the physics requirements, saying something about how the derby is 'all about physics!' Our packleader looked at me quizzically and said, 'Oh, I thought it was about having fun!'. I turned red, blush of course, but responded, 'Oh, well I thought learning about physics would be fun!!'

(Anyway, for me that would be fun, and I think ds and the other kids in the den are in it to learn about all kinds of things - the boys voted on our next pin to pursue and although a variety of things were discussed, engineer came out hands down the favorite. I was really excited to see that!)

Wow, it seems like longer ago than this year! I think he was 2nd in his pack, went to district but didn't place. He was about in the middle at the district event. His total Explore score was just under DYS level, 1 or 2 individual scores hit DYS levels.
