My ds7 is going to take the scat. I think that we have to let him take it cold, no prep, this way he won't get in over his head.

My husband, who is not happy with what is currently going on at his school, wants to do some test prep. This way he'll score well, and so at school he'll be covered for ela and math. (The school is having a problem getting it's act together)

He has me about 75% convinced. mostly, cause the school can't get it's act together.

    What do you all think?

DS7 has a 160 in verbal and 145 on math.... but a pretty normal processing speed.

I don't know the test at all but I would only suggest prepping for technical parts of the test like filling in bubbles on the answer sheet, skipping hard questions and answering the ones he knows then going back, and other test taking tips that would help him in the process of taking the test. But I wouldn't try to drill him or review any subject matter. He's probably got that down anyway!

Though test prep is all the rage for the ACT and SAT, I don't think it is typical to prep for the SCAT at this point. All you really need is to ensure that he knows what an analogy is and has basic computer skills.

well, DS7 did the pre test this morning and did well on the math. 8 out of 10, he understood what he did on the 2 he got wrong.

the verbal was not as good, he got 5 out of 10.

we went over the test and well, it was difficult for me to understand why what he got wrong, was wrong.... I honestly don't really understand analogies.... so he looked to me for answers and I stood saying "Humma humma humma" (I get visual analogies just fine and could wax poetic on relasionships between different works of art.... but on word analogies I am thunderstruck)

Dh is slightly better at them and came up with some answers to explain to him what he did wrong.

So I guess we will get a book on how verbal analogies work...... oy

    DH wins.

    mmmmmmmmm..................... next time, next time.

    AAAAHHHHHH!

So we gave him the practice test this morning and he was fine, I drove him to school and we went over what he needs to do once he gets there....

"What's the first thing you do when you get in the classroom?" I say

"Hand in my home work" he replys

"Yes your home work don't forget today, you have 2 days worth of homework" we talk some more about other stuff,

He gets out of the car says I love you waves and goes into the building.

His teacher just email me and he was crying...... his teacher emailed me and asked if anything happened this morning.

So we are going to meet with her on friday morning!

    aaaahhhhhhh!

are you afraid he got upset because he did not score better?

Maybe something else is going on - would the teacher want to meet over one-time crying? (maybe your school is smaller than ours! wink

Did she give you any other clues?
