    Hi,

My second grade son was recommended for gifted testing by his teachers, on the basis of his MAP scores and in-class performance. His MAP scores are at the 99th percentile for both reading and math. He has kind of a spiky profile, with very high scores for some sub-areas (eg. testing at 73rd percentile for 11th grade for vocabulary use and function) and much lower at other areas (his spelling is terrible and he never quite got phonics, being a more visual reader). His lexile reading score is at 8th grade level.
So we got the CogAT test result and he was at the 71st percentile-- way below the cut-off point for gifted. I'm wondering if it is unusual for there to be such a discrepancy between MAP scores (math and reading) and the CogAt score.
My son has some disabilities: sensory integration disorder, eye convergence disorder, and is in general a very tense child. The MAP tests are not timed and are not group tests. Do you think it is likely that the conditions of the test (the first timed test he's ever taken) caused him to under-perform?
I know that CogAt tests ability and MAP tests achievement, but a discrepancy this large seems odd. MAP tests are a criterion for gifted testing, so presumably there is at least some correlation between the two.

Any suggestions for how to proceed?
