Now I am wondering if I should have said anything yet...
My son met this kid while doing community theater. Obviously very bright, but I'd never met his Mom until today. His Dad used to take him to rehearsals and he wasn't much of a talker. DS and "J" have been talking on the phone for a couple months now, and today they got together for the first time since the play ended.
Mom came over and spilled her guts about J's school situation, slight social issues, reading before school age, entering kindy at four, regularly testing at 99th percentile... I suppose I got excited, and talked at length about DITD and all of their wonderful programs, especially the DYS. NOW I am wondering if I jumped the gun, as I hardly know these people. Maybe I should have waited until I had a better idea of whether this boy is 99.0 or 99.9. There's actually a big gap there, and I was too excited by the idea of another PG kid in the area to stop and think about that. I'm feeling the potential awkwardness of the situation if things don't go well. Sigh... I can be far too impetuous at times!

Well, even if he's 99.0 and doesn't get into DYS, I hope the relationship remains a positive one and the mom doesn't get uptight over it.

I wouldn't let it worry you, Lorel. I mean, you were obviously trying to be nice and helpful. You were sharing resources, and even if it turns out those resources don't work for her--and here's hoping that they do! For your sake, if not for hers and her son's! --it's clear that you were being a kind and generous person. Just keep being the nice person that you are. How can she fail to be won over?

If you referred her to this website, she could very well be reading your post. I wouldn't worry about referring her here - there is helpful info for everyone, and I wouldn't worry about the 99 vs. 99.9. Still, since your identity is not masked, you might want to reconsider talking about someone who might recognize herself. I don't think it will be awkward if her son isn't at the same level as yours - they're friends, right? And regardless of his exact LOG, I'm sure you'll have so much helpful info to share.

I think there is a lot of valuable info here, even for those who don't qualify for DYS. I wouldn't hesitate to refer people here if they are interested.

lol! MrWiggly is a DYS "reject" and I still hang around!!! He might not be crazy smart but he's smart enough for me to struggle with him!!!
I think it's great that you referred her. I meet too many parents who just don't realize what they've got in their child. Any info or resources or support she can get here to help her out should be appreciated. Hope she joins in.

We're glad you're here, doodlebug! Reject-schmeject! I always say that if you can get anything useful from being on this forum--or even better, contribute something useful for the rest of us to beg, borrow or steal!--then you absolutely belong here. Personally, I don't really even care if you have GT kids, frankly! Let alone HG+ kids. If you care about GT issues, then you belong here. Period.

I don't even know if my children will qualify for DYS (or if I'll even apply!... i'm not a big fan of rejection... ;-))... and I'm here. I've found solace, laughter, and lots of ideas (hiding for a while - until my recent soul-bearing...).
I think it's hugely helpful for anyone with a gifted child regardless of level! I think it's flattering to be told you should check it out, and I think your friend will be glad she's come - regardless of whether she thinks she should apply to DYS (if she's less chicken than me!), or whether it's just a resource and community for her!
[To be honest, i guess i didn't realize you had to be in DYS to use the board... like i said, i've found it hugely helpful thus far! So, i hope it's ok i'm still hanging around!...]
