For the most part his achievement matches depending on what he does. Currently he is failing math because he fails to show his work. He can do the problem in his head but can't show his work. We tried to have him show his work in an effort to double check his answer but his handwriting is so poor he overlapps the numbers and can't keep them organized so that gives him the wrong number and he gets confused.

Polar bear he holds the pencil in a non traditional manner. He can spell and think clearly but not actually write it. He can't even color in the lines its like he is not physically capable to write.

How old is your DS? I think you might be on to something, but I also wonder whether it could just also be that the writing demands are high.

I am seeing this currently with DS6. He is probably my more "mathy" child. Because he is good at mental computation, they are trying to add to his "challenge" by making him write lengthy explanations for HOW he got the answer. The writing load is probably the only thing that is challenging to him about this (although I guess he is learning to be a better writer in math class wink ). DD9 never had to write this much in 1st grade, especially not in math class.

Dd just turned 9 and is in a 4th grade gifted class. The fact that he is failing the exact subject he scored highest in and all because he can't show his work is very concerning to us.

If you have the numerical scores (not just the percentiles), they are not the same as IQ, but are supposed to be on the same "scale" as IQ (100 average, SD 15).

For purposes of answering the question from the specialist, I would say that you don't know his IQ because it has never been tested, but his CogAT scores are ____. That way you have given them all the information you have, and they should know how to interpret the CogAT information better than you or we do.

Have you tried giving him graph paper to do his math work on? That was helpful for my DD until she (mostly) mastered keeping everything in line. If he is able to show work when given graph paper to write on, that is definitely an accommodation that you should ask for that should be very easy for the school to grant.

((Hugs, Cola)). Is this Common Core-aligned math, by chance? I only ask because the writing requirements seem to have drastically increased both at the 1st and 4th grade levels in math at our schools this year. I do wonder what the effect is on primarily mathy kiddos, who often intuitively know the answer.

Keep us in the loop - we wish you and your DS all of the best. I know that others here are very wise about some of the issues you are concerned about.

Elizabeth we literally just went out and bought reams if graph paper for this exact purpose. The school said they didn't have any so we said fine and last night my husband bought a bunch if it. We are going to try it for his math homework and see if it helps. Does your dd also struggle with handwriting? As for what his IQ could be I will just give them a copy of the letter we got which showed his percentiles as that is all we got. I've never even been told his scores on aims would that help you think?

Loy...yes it is common core math which deserves its own thread because I can go on for days about the negative ramifications it has on gifted kids lol.

My DD does have a diagnosis of dysgraphia, although I have always been a little dubious about its accuracy. But she had a lot of trouble specifically with keeping columns lined up on her math work, and generally with not wanting to write.
