If your school fails in this regard, then I think you have some tough decisions to make, since you will not want him to struggle. Only you know if the math is unchallenging for him. If he is bringing home homework and never needs any help, for instance, he probably needs to move up to a higher level, regardless of whether he says he is bored or asks to be moved up.

Yes, the child is supposed to be placed in their "stronger" subject. And later on science is added to the mix! I don't know how that works. After repeat testing I will probably force involvement in the gifted math, unless he's super happy about math in his regular class.

I'm not certain about math school work and mistakes. Frequently DS comes home once a week with a handful of papers, much of them I cannot read, he cannot read, etc. The math sheets are better, and they just have random errors. He is verbal when left to his own devices, but the minute I ask about school or specifics, he clams up! I have a hard time figuring out exactly what is going on.

Which makes me wonder if there is more going on behind the scenes? Honestly, I mean it when I say he will talk every minute of the day (unless he's watching tv and frequently he's still talking then). But when I try to discuss school, it's "I don't know", or "let's talk about something else". Hmmm, makes me think he's avoiding or upset or something. Sigh.

I would tend to agree. Kids often know what will upset their parents. And they don't really like to upset their parents.

Yes. DS does sometimes withhold information I think. I try to word things to be neutral when talking to him about school and work. I also try to encourage him to discuss it's okay to say whatever he really feels, etc.
