I've read the ohio standards. But I'm trying to see if I'm clear on where my HG kids falls grade-wise in math without paying for another WJ (we were at 1.9 in preschool). What I'm looking for is a quality link to some math tests or the like for 2nd grade math - it would be easier for me to know how bad a mismatch this may be if i'm looking at the "problems" not a sentence describing what they should be able to do. Again, if the self contained program didn't close my summer wouldn't be slipping by worrying about this junk. public won't talk to me anymore unless we enroll and probably won't make promises until she's there for months... MAN it is insane that "this" has to be so hard - look at all of the posts out there about trying to find a school.

    watcha know people? :-)

Did you look at the released Ohio Achievement tests? I read their 'standards' and thought, "Huh? What does that mean?". But the actual achievement tests are concrete problems that show what they expect a child to know at the end of the school year.

Have you tried the Singapore Math placement tests? It's free, though some parts of their approach and notation is quite different from U.S. approaches and notation, so don't let that throw you: http://www.singaporemath.com/Placement_s/12.htm. Also, remember that Singapore Math is roughly 1-2 semesters ahead of a typical U.S. school, so a child in 2A is really operating at the 2nd semester of 2nd grade or even the 1st semester of 3rd grade.

Also, here's a set of free tests for grades 3-11: http://scotthochberg.com/taas.html. (I know nothing about this organization or what they espouse, so please don't take this link as a recommendation of the group. I just like their free tests!) I realize they don't provide 2nd grade tests, but it might still give you a sense of where your children are operating. If they can pass the 3rd grade test, then they presumably can pass 2nd grade, right?

I have lots of reading assessment links (albeit many of questionable value), but not many for math. Sorry. frown

NY has it's 3rd grade achievement tests online. It covers 2nd half of 2nd grade and 1st half of 3rd grade.

JHU CTY offers placement tests. If you call they will send you a test and you are to let the child do it without help, fax it back to them and they will let you know what grade work is appropriate for your child. This test is free.

Do you have to sign up for CTY classes? This seems too good to be true!

I'm thinking the same thing Kriston. IF not, I'm calling right now.

I don't think you need to be signed up for classes. You can tell them you are considering taking a math class and you need to see which one they should take.

If they won't give you the test let me know and I can request one and either e-mail it privately or fax it. It is an out of level test so it covers several grade levels.

They may have to be eligible, though, to take their math classes (have taken the SCAT) thru them?
