My DD loved the Hobbit but interestingly could not get into LoR for about 18 months or so afterwards - she found the fellowship of the ring very slow at first.
Rick Riordan stuff she tore through like a dose of salts and was also into the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. I thought that vocabulary if the Redwall series was several steps above the usual kids/Tweens/'young adult' dross.
Also Geromino Stilton was still read then. They had a lot of history an other lore embedded into.
Another thing that my DD loved and continues to love is the Cricket magazine.
