DS7 developed a sudden interest in learning the periodic table of elements last week. So far, he's memorizing the names and symbols and we got him some nice cards that have facts about the elements that he's studying. Looking for ideas of what to share with him to continue his interest (we know from history that we have "open windows" with him when he has a strong interest in a subject before he burns through it). Videos? Concepts? It has been a long time since either DH or I has looked at anything related to the elements... let's say 20 years. lol

Thank you! Somewhere, he came across the "Experiments you can do at home but probably shouldn't" title... he found it very funny and wants the book. I am more than a little scared. ;-)

Did you see Arden on the Jimmy Kimmel show? This adorable, engaging 6-year-old recited the periodic table. On YouTube here.

There's an app version of the book Dee Dee and squishys recommended 'The Elements - a visual exploration' if you have an ipad. It's expensive at $14, though covers off the same material with a fun interface - really good to get an idea of what the elements look like (or don't). And I know exactly what you mean about the open window!

This is my son from a few years ago. The placemats are courtesy of Theo Gray. The video briefly went viral, which is why there are so many views. We had put it up for our parents to see, but I linked it in a "show off your kid" thread on another message board, and it was picked up by some web site that has a cool link of the day.

My son loves the Adventures of the Elements card game by Richard James, and the accompanying books. You can find them here: www.adventuresoftheelements.comI believe the products are also available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. It's fun, but addicting to an obsessive kid like mine, so be warned! Disclosure- We've met the creator, Richard James, who is from our area, but have no other interest (especially financial) in the game, cards, books, etc.

ElizabethN thanks for the mention of THeo Gray. I went to the website and was amazed at the quality of cards and games related to chemistry!
Your son is ADORABLE...These are memories to hold dearly. He reminds me so much of my own son at that age; wanted me to read him words, everywhere he saw them.

We bought the board game Periodic Quest that's going around the internet. The kids like it. We're playing on the easy level which is you roll the dice and move your pawn up one column of the periodic table, then go to the bottom of the next column and go up again. It's a race to the end. The harder levels include cards in the board game. You earn cards if you remember factoids as you race through the table. ElizabethN, that video is super cute!

http://www.enasco.com/product/SB28840MThis is a magnetic model of an atom that can be manipulated to represent different elements. I've seen people make their own out of felt, because it's expensive and only goes up to neon.

ElizabethN, so ADORABLE! The funniest part is how he is like a much older kid in his knowledge but still sucks his thumb in between ever chance he gets. My DD does this too and it cracks me up!

Yes, the thumb sucking in the middle is great. Thank you, everyone. There is also a board game called Elementeo and a recent release called Compounded that may be good. (Compounded may be too difficult; I haven't played it, so I can't say.)

The window seems (temporarily) shut. :-(
I can't believe it closed so quickly... we made the terrible error of showing him code.org when he expressed an interest in coding again... I'm sure you can guess the rest of the story.
Will save this thread for our next opening!
