Hi. I am new here but I just received my ds middle of year/winter MAP test scores in reading. His beginning of year scores were 181 or so and this mid year score is a 197.

Can anyone lend insight into the correlation to giftedness? He has not had an IQ test. What are the typical scores for gifted children on the MAP test?

Thank you for any insight into this and any suggestions on either grade skipping or just saying with differentiated learning.

Hi CK27, Welcome! What grade is your DS in? You can look up his scores on the charts in Appendix B here: NWEA MAP norms

As for whether those scores are in the gifted range, that varies by district (and whether they have a gifted program at all). E.g., some districts say that anyone scoring in the 95 percentile or above is gifted, but I wouldn't say there's a standard anywhere.

You ask about grade skip versus differentiated learning. You really don't give enough info for anyone to comment on specifics. Is your DS consistently underchallenged in school? Is anyone in his grade scoring similarly? Is the differentiation working?

Sorry! My son is in kindergarten and just turned 6. He also has high diebl scores.

He is challenged so far in school but my fear is it won't continue.

For the other Reading assessments, I haven't begun the book assessments yet. But I did complete Jackson's phonemic awareness assessments. For First Sound Fluency, he increased from 24 to 59 points (mid year goal is 30). In Letter Naming Fluency he went from 59 to 70 correct letters in a minute (no goal is stated for this one). We did new assessments, Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (breaking apart a word orally) and Nonsense Words Fluency (reading make believe words). Jackson got a score of 53 (mid year benchmark goal is 20) on the segmenting and 51 (mid year benchmark goal is 17) on the nonsense words.

It is 99 % across the board and mid 3 rd grade average scores.

Do you know how this compares to other gifted kids?
