I think symbol search is maybe more like a super long kindergarten level matching worksheet than like a where's waldo. I think no one finishes it, that way they spread apart the levels of speed.

It actually looks a lot like a Where's Waldo page - the symbols are in rows but there are a lot of them all over the page, so even though it's not a all-in-one picture like Where's Waldo it also doesn't look like a super long kindergarten level matching worksheet either.

Where's waldo seems more like the cancellation subtest to me. But I haven't seen any of the subtests to be honest, so it's all just guessing on my part.

Polly I think you're right and I was wrong - I'm sorry about the confusion! I was going on memory when my visually-challenged dd took the WISC - her neuropsych showed me what I thought was the symbol search test pages but when I looked just now at online descriptions, I found a link that has pictures of what the subtests look like, and the pages I'm thinking of were like the cancellation examples. I didn't recall my dd having any additional subtests (cancellation is an optional subtest) but it makes sense that she might have had an additional subtest given at the time - the concern about her vision arose because she scored > .5th percentile on symbol search... so I'm sure after I heard that "> .5th percentile" nothing else was really getting through my brain cells in any meaningful way lol.

My apologies for my previous post confusing cancellation and symbol search!

Ok, I looked it up. It looks super easy like anyone could do it, but someone who is not focused would probably have troubles with it if they have to do it more more than a minute.

I'm guessing anyone with ADHD would tend to do poorly on both of the processing speed subtests (coding and symbol search).

What doesn't make sense to me is that everyone says people with ADHD have normal intelligence. So why are these subtests on an IQ test then?
