Have a student who enjoys thinker-style mathematics?

"Formula of Unity" - a great thinker-style international math Olympiad for grade 6-12 students.

"In the academic year 2013/14 St. Petersburg University, Russia, together with Euler Foundation holds the united international mathematical Olympiad "Formula of Unity" / "The Third Millennium". The Olympiad is a part of the program "Formula of Unity" that includes also summer international multi-disciplinary camps..."

You can find more information here: http://www.formulo.org/en/olympiad/.
    Highlights:
    - solutions should be submitted in writing (in English)
    - the deadline to turn in the solutions of the first round is Oct 21st
    - participation in this Olympiad is free of charge.

Yes, that project is a collaboration of a group of Russian and Spanish mathematicians.
The problems are in style that is emphasized in the Russian-style enrichment for math-gifted children. A problem is not about applying an algorithm and getting a numerical answer. Instead, each problem is about discovering a math idea, and coming up with a rigorous explanation.
That is an excellent chance for a child to practice the type of math that is not emphasized in regular US school curriculum.

The project is 2 years old, and so far has been successful. If your child decides to participate in the Olympiad, then she (or he) should be ready to commit her time both on solving these problems and on writing the solutions down.

Thanks for the information. The problems look good. DS7 is too young for this, but we'll remember this for the future.
