The same courses that are $640 for a three month subsrciption through Johns Hopkins CTY are currently between $35 and $50 or so for a year subscription through the homeschoolbuyerscoop.

And there is no prerequisite (CTY requires a qualifying math score and completion of at least grade 5 math. FYI, DS7 just listened to the first earth and space science lecture, did the activity and took the first assessment with no problem. He's about done with third grade EPGY math, but there were no math questions on anything covered so far.)

It's actually quite expensive. If you're a homeschooler, the discount is substantial.

ps - separate software is required for biology and chemistry. I could not get it to work on my vista computer. FYI. The earth science and life science courses use flash. Make sure you try it out before you buy.

Actually, last year someone asked and received the answer that NON-homeschoolers could indeed (I love saying that word, "indeed!") join as AFTERschoolers and take advantage of the group buys. So go ahead and sign up, guilt free!

FWIW, DD 7 took the cyber-ed middle school physical science and life science last year. She has never before taken any formal science, but she breezed through it. She did not like the physics much, but she loved the bio.

DS at 10/11 took the high school level cyber-ed bio and chem and he especially loved the chemistry course.

These are self paced courses; the upper level have more lessons than the lower level. It was interesting to find out that my son qualified for the MIDDLE SCHOOL courses through his JHU/CTY talent search. Yikes! I am glad we didn't pay the big bucks for him to take courses that wouldn't have been remotely challenging.

DS5 and I just did the Life Science and the Earth and Space Science demos. He thought they were really cool and they were not way too hard for him (though I could this being a good challenge for him). He loved the information on DNA and RNA and matching the nucleotides. Took him all of 2 seconds to find the pattern. Hmm....have to sleep on this tonight.
