    That's helpful insight on one way to approach it. As it happened, I left it up to DS and he decided to approach it in some kind of order and wanted mastery of the topics rather than just passing them. I am not helping him at all and he is selecting the higher difficulty levels as well as challenging himself to using mental math so he does miss a few here and there.

    That's good to keep in mind. I don't think DS has done any of the geometry yet.

    The setting he should choose will depend on the purpose. For DS, it doesn't make sense to do problems below the hard level since the whole point is the challenge. He did try the normal setting for a bit but the problems were too easy. The problems in the higher settings sometimes get pretty complex and truly challenge his understanding of a topic. If your DS already taught himself pre-algebra, then he should be able to do the hard level at least for pre-algebra.

    Thanks - that is a clear description. I think that was how DS ended up in Counting.
