My son took the NWEA MAP's testing this fall, he is an 8th grader and scored a 278 in mathematics and a 250 in reading. Can somebody please help analyze these scores? Are these average or above average in the state of California? Do these scores show he is gifted?

I cant tell you where they fall in CA but I can nationally..

    for fall testing:
math 278 is 99th percentile for 10th grade and 98th for 11th grade
    reading 250 is 98th percentile 8th grade 94th percentile 11th grade

NWEA suggests that any score over 95th percentile MAY be gifted.

Have scores gone down that much? I have been using 2011 Fall norms, which are more competitive. Math 278 is not quite 99th percentile for 9th grade. You need 282 to get 99th percentile for 10th grade. Ditto for Reading scores. 250 is between 95th (244) and 99th (257) percentile for 8th grade.

I have been using 2011 fall norms also. I cannot find anything newer.
