Darn! Safari just trashed a long-ish post I'd composed.

In a nutshell, I was inquiring whether possessing the theory of mind that allows premeditated lying also translates into the ability to understand why lying is undesirable. The research focuses on strategies for 3-5yos+, and only one recent University of Toronto study even acknowledges the possibility of younger children fibbing.

(Here's the press release from January: http://news.utoronto.ca/even-toddlers-tell-untruths.)

    Again...oh, asynchrony!

I may well test drive that! wink I think we're at an age where a piggyback is a good distraction, too, so same vein.

I'm inclined to think that the moral reasoning is taught... Once the need for it arises. Right along with "No hitting, the cat likes gentle touches" when the kid nearly kills the cat with the boundless enthusiasm of their love....

While a child that young can lie they are generally not thought to comphrehend the world in such a way that they can understand the moral aspects of it. Did they screen "a child of our time" over there it has some interesting stuff on that.

Thanks for the suggestion, puffin. I'll look into that show. Are you thinking of the BBC feature?
