Please, let's focus on the positives of the above thread :-) When we write about some people's (minority!!!!)opinions, we put more power in them. Let's focus on the positives. Mom is so unselfish by putting everything out in the open. I love when people share their painfully (in most cases) acquired knowledge/experience with others.

Neato - I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter! I can't imagine a 2nd grader getting to the point of bullying? I'm having similar thoughts about our school situation. Especially when I read stories like this one.
Great points about enrichment and world view, Ania. I definitely want our kids to have a level of understanding and comfort with many cultures. I'd love to have them to travel to a 3rd world country and learn at least one other language. Preferably soon! We also have a small fortune going into extra activities too, and I don't think homeschooling is going to cost us much more than public school considering how we support the school financially.
I can't imagine being jealous or critical of Elizabeth Barrett's family? It sounded like they just didn't even know where to turn. My thoughts when I heard their story was "I'm sure glad I was still in denial when DS was that age".

Thanks eema and kimck. Ania, you are so right. Her parents are very brave. Trailblazers have to be! I love to hear their story and wish Chelsea all the best!

After reading some of the negative comments about this brilliant, hard-working young woman & her family, I wonder if the negativity is due to parents who live vicariously through their children's accomplishments? If another child achieves higher than their child, well, it's because the other child is more privileged and their child would be that brilliant if they were as privileged. So I think stories like this threaten some parents feelings of accomplishment. I feel sorry for those kids.
I would love to have a music/art room like that girls music room. Maybe someday we'll redesign the roof on an old addition to our house and put in a bay of windows. That room was just beautiful, but I liked what the mom said about the glow coming from her daughters face, not the sun shining in.
