i have been letting DS6 stay home a lot.
with the school excuse that he is "sick", no further detail,
    But
the teacher will ask DS6- were u sick?

i really debated this dilemma- of what DS6 should say. i don't want to tell him to lie. but the truth will not be 'excused' and he can't have all these absences. sooooo

i discussed it with him. he suggested that he could say he is sick b/c it isn't a complete lie- because he is sick, not his body that making him sick, but school. he says he is sick of going to a school that is not teaching him new things. so he is sick. His brain is hurting….

i had to laugh at his ingeniousness at this, but I decided ok.
    *********************
He is sick at least 1x/wk.
    Sometimes twice/wk.

On his “sick” days, we have been doing 1st grade work and just prepping for him to enter 1st grade in jan. it is a lot he already knows, but I am saying this is review to make sure he knows it. I was told he really needs to be polished in his grammar--
It is interesting. He reads well. Great at math. Write well also, though will write phonetically when doesn’t know spelling or if he has time, he will go around house and seek out the word he is trying to spell- like if he remembers seeing it written somewhere, I need to encourage him to use dictionary…
(he can read words, yet when he writes them, he doesn’t always recall how to spell them-- I was same way!)

anyhow, his "sick" days are really helping him.
he doesn't mind the review now, as more interesting. he also likes the new stuff (2nd grade curric), and time to work on his own creative projects smile

    "Sick of school" says! LOL!

My ds6 also gets tripped up with spelling despite advanced reading. They really are completely different skills, I'm learning. My ds6 also HATES to spell phonetically if he knows it's incorrect. I know my ds' class has a frequently-used word wall...seems fair to have a similar tool at home. Dictionary is a good idea. My ds was discussing alphabetical order this weekend, so he'd probably like to just read one.

I think spelling would be the toughest skill for ds to master if we advanced him to 1st.

Be careful with the "sick" days. Frequent student absences count against schools in various metrics, and the teacher may become resentful.

ultramarina- you may have hit the nail on the head!!!
not only has my son stated to the teacher he is bored and complained that he wants to learn new stuff,
yes he is always late (getting going to school is huge struggle b/c he just doesn't want to go) and yes, he freq misses days.
i am careful to say he is always sick.
but yes, maybe the teacher is resentful? idk.
several kids left her class early on...
    i should have done same!
    lesson learned!
