    Hi Everyone

I'm looking for alternatives to (or what comes after) Sesame Street. We limit "screen time" for our DS (3 years 10 months), but I'd like to have a few options that have some educational value!

Any recommendations for shows (preferably on PBS) that are more advanced then Sesame Street, but still appropriate for a 3 year old? Using Ruf's estimates, I'd guess he's a "Level 3" although we haven't done any formal testing yet.

    Thank you!
    Kathie

World World and Super Why are nice for kids getting the hang of reading. The Life of Birds and similar series are nice viewing--some have a bit of nature gore.

DS2 is currently loving our blu rays of "The Universe". I think lots of similar types of science shows are inherently interesting to little ones. After the first episode he drew a cute little solar system and excitedly brought it to me.

As for PBS shows aimed at the younger set, these have impressed me as being decent: "Martha Speaks" and "Wordgirl". "Super Why!" is okay too, mostly for drilling on early reading skills. I believe someone else here has recommended the show "Between the Lions", but I haven't seen it yet. ETA: Oh, yeah, and "Word World" is often recommended.

To answer your subject line question, "Electric Company" came after Sesame Street when I was growing up! wink

Curious George is good, and has some fun online activities at pbskids.org. Also Sid the Science Kid, Dragonfly TV, Ruff Ruffman. My kiddo liked this show: Zula Patrol

The one with Martin Short? My DD likes that one, and I do too. Since it concentrates on subjects like the rain forest or bee-hives rather than letters or counting or something similar, I find that it has a broad appeal to children of different ages.

I wanted to like Sid the Science Kid, but it let me down. The information is very limited, with no depth. Sid comes off as narcissistic and obnoxious... kind of like Letterman laughing at his own jokes. The other students are equally obnoxious and the stereotyping is annoying.

I won't let the kids watch the Cat in the Hat show. I've noticed that it sometimes contains incorrect facts (can't think of any off the top of my head, though) and I don't like the simpering affect of the cat.

I should confess that I never actually saw Sid the Science Kid, but it's name sounded promising! The others I mentioned I did see and like. smile
