    Hi,
My son is 5 yrs old and going into 1st grade. He started K at 4 at a private G&T school, but I was very disappointed in what was taught, and feel he missed a lot of what K's learn.(Found out in Feb. no one was teaching reading, due to lack of communication....) This year he will be at a Magnet School for G&T.

He doesn't know how to read, I know he is gifted, he has been tested and is a member of MENSA...but he refuses to read, we can get him to a little but it's always a battle. IDK how to make it fun for him, and I am so concerned he is behind entering 1st grade.

Where are MOST kids for reading and writing ENTERING 1st grade? What's the norm?

    Thank-you for any info....

At least in our small city MN local school district, 1st grade was a learn-to-read year. (My DS skipped 1st, so I can't give specifics.) I believe a very large range of reading abilities is common for 1st grade.

You could try to contact the teacher for this upcoming year and tell her your concerns and ask if it's anything to worry about and/or if there's anything you can do to help. Maybe the school website has info about the curriculum?

I would encourage reading a lot to him at this point. I don't think that there's any reason to be worried at this stage. I have seen others recommend starfall.com, you could check that out.

Most kids I've seen are reading mostly sight words, or beginner readers in first. There are some that cannot read still however or have minimal reading skills going into 1st ( some states do not mandate K at all ). If he is going to a Magnet School for GT, I would highly suspect most if not all can read some, and a lot will be reading at a higher than grade level.
My DS8 (birthday today yey!) was reading Harry Potter by the time he entered Kindergarten but now going into 4th grade, last year he still had friends that were struggling readers so not everyone has an easy time learning it.Writing wise, most can write their letters and form small sentences by first in an average school...although some are still hard to decipher, and spelling levels are all over the board.
What would worry me is the G&T school and their learning pace...have you contacted them about what their grade level expectations are for 1st so you can see where your son falls, especially since he is young. I can't believe a private GT school wouldn't teach reading...thats um...shocking really!
Have you tried getting him to play around on www.starfall.com ? Do you have an ipad that allows apps that have finger writing programs? Also dry erase marker boards with letters to trace, and small sentences, work books with lots of characters that make things look more interesting?
All my my sons have used starfall while learning to read. My 4 year old twins currently play on it daily for the reading section.
How are your sons other educational areas ( math, etc)
Good luck, I'd say start by asking what the level going into 1st is, and see if its a good fit for your little man.

    welcome to the board mom2_3

www.readingeggs.com is an awesome sight for reading as well. They have a free 14 day (I think it maybe 21 day) trial.

Thank-you! I will check into the links. I was shocked when I saw just how bad the private school was doing. The teachers had no one holding them accountable...the Owner/Director is a bit flighty. I asked his new school if we should repeat K and they said he would be bored. As far as Math, he is WAY ahead of the game. He loves science and history....it's the reading and writing that has me concerned. I think the school thinks he will catch up in that area. He's my 1st, I have a 3 yr old daughter and another one due in Nov. I just want the best for him, like every parent. I just hope we're making the right choice in having him continue to 1st, instead of him repeating K.

He is a fast learner, when he wants to be...he's VERY stubborn and he's ironed willed...can be good in a lot of situations, and not in others..LOL!

If it makes you feel any better, I would do exactly as you are doing (not reapeating K), especially considering he's a fast learner.

We live in MN too...and I have been told by some that 1st grade is a learn to read year, but then you start googling and looking into it more and it got me nervous.

    Thank-you!!!

It probably depends where you live. We live in a very competitive school district with lots of PhD types who are now stay at home moms. I think most of the kids are reading something in first grade- some are reading well, others just a little.
You definitely do want to have him reading though by the middle of first grade or he could get left behind. Reading builds on itself, and it feeds into other topics like math or science, etc.
I made a few flash cards of simple sight words, to help my son get reading (when he was younger). That opened the door to reading very simple books, which really gave him confidence and made him more excited about reading. That could be something to try.
