Had a friend over yesterday and she moved to SC last year. Her daughter was in grade 1 and said that they assessed her at 4.5 reading level and comprehension, yet she was talking about books that DD was reading last summer, like Ramona. DD was assessed at grade 3 level is more like Heidi, Judy Moody level -- though I know there are different levels of Heidi. She is getting more into books are that are more like 100-300 rather than double digits. Though she can enjoys the topics more of Boxcar Kids (I think that is the series).
I just wondered how different are the levels across the country. How do you assess with Iowa scale when the scales are so different?

Not everyone chooses to read to the level they are capable of reading.

My question was about curriculum levels differences.

Ren,
I think most schools (independent of states) use Lexile scale for LOG. The only thing is that they usually under/overestimate the younger kids (especially kinder and 1st grade teachers). It has oberver variation and someone may score higher than the other on the same kid depending on what they ask the kid to read. My DD9 got higher lexile scale in 2nd grade than 4th but she is progressing and I attributed that to technical error.

I think the teacher made an assessment herself which books she had them read and what level they were. I don't think they were tested with Lexile or anything, though I cannot be sure.
I did notice, in an exchange withsome in the forum, how different her grade 1 curriculum was compared to my DD and are in the same DOE.
My only interest is based on proposed move in 2 years and wanted to do a 4th grade skip. Since she does math online with CTY, we know she is comfortably ahead in math but wasn't sure what the base was in reading and comprehension.
She does the extra weekly science class at the museum, which accelerated and challenging. So it was only this area.
Thanks, Ren

I saved this link from here. Scholastic's such a big company it should be a good (roughly) interstate guide. http://bookwizard.scholastic.com/tbw/homePage.do

La Texican,
You have given me a few websites that I truly like over the last few days (this one and reading eggs). Keep them coming!

It's because I read too much here. But I really like what people say. It's better here than the 100s of channels on my tv.

Hi Ren, Have you had a look at the DORA online test? http://www.letsgolearn.com/DD did it a while ago and it appeared to match our thoughts on where she was at. I know a few people have used it on here - I don't know how valid it is, but it's cheap and might give you a general indication? Giftodd
