    First of all let me shout the good news from the rooftops...DD GOT IN TO THE GATE SCHOOL! Woohoo!

    Now on to the conundrum...the school sent home the test results and there is NO mention of which test she took. Can you help me decipher which test she took based on the bit of information they gave us in the letter?
    Here is what it said:

    The second round of testing was the ability test. This test measured learned reasoning and problem-solving skills in three different areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal. Reasoning skills develop gradually throughout a persons lifetime and at different rates for different individuals. This test does not measure such factors as effort, attention, motivation and work habits, which contribute to school achievement as well.

    The Verbal Battery measures a child's ability to remember and transform sequences of English words, to understand them, and to make inferences and judgments about them.

    The Quantitative Battery tests the child's understanding of basic quantitative concepts and relationships that are essential for learning mathematics. Tasks measure both the understanding of relational concepts and the student's ability to discover relationships and to figure out a rule or principle that explains them.

    The Nonverbal Battery measures reasoning using pictures and geometric shapes. This reduces the impact of language on the student's score. The NB also appraises the student's ability to use her cognitive resources in new situations.


    Any ideas on what this could be?

    Search for some of the phrases above (e.g., "transform sequences of English words"), and you get links to CogAT. That would be my guess.

    Thanks! That was my best guess but I knew that you testing gurus would have a more educated guess than I ever would!

    So now on to the part I don't "get." Her scores.
    VRAS was 98
    QRAS was 99
    NVAS was 94

    but...drumroll please...the part that makes NO sense to me...

    Composite score was 99.

    How does that work? I wish they had given us an actual report an not just this paper filled out by hand...

    I'm not an expert, but it's pretty straightforward. The composite can be higher because your daughter did well across all three measures. Some kids may do particularly well in the nonverbal, some in the verbal, and some in the quantitative batteries. The fact that she did well in all three will mean that her overall percentile will be higher. (i.e. even though 6% of kids did better than her in the nonverbal, many of them did not score as high in the quantitative or verbal batteries).

    Congratulations! Great scores across the board.

    Well, that makes sense! I was thinking her composite score should be an average of the others.
