I don't know what a reasonable expectation is for written output (in spite of the fact that I have a 9 y.o. also), but at this point, why not typing?
My kids have issues with handwriting and the psych recommended that they learn to use a keyboard ASAP. My dd did the following program in a matter of a couple weeks.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/ though I have yet to make her type anything (we're doing a little bit of afterschooling with Latin, and thus far it seems faster to have her tell me the answers orally; I'm not sure when I'll have her switch over to written).
