How old is your DS? I think you might be on to something, but I also wonder whether it could just also be that the writing demands are high.
I am seeing this currently with DS6. He is probably my more "mathy" child. Because he is good at mental computation, they are trying to add to his "challenge" by making him write lengthy explanations for HOW he got the answer. The writing load is probably the only thing that is challenging to him about this (although I guess he is learning to be a better writer in math class
). DD9 never had to write this much in 1st grade, especially not in math class.
