Research INTERNSHIP programs!!
Usually associated with universities/large companies, these are often competitive and g-loaded opportunities to get into real research settings.
My DD would never have made it through the last two years of high school without this kind of thing on the horizon.
Travel (for kids that like it)--
engaging, novel, and not that expensive (depending upon where you go and what you do)-- Citypasses are your friend; LOADS of museum/cultural passes for discounted pricing. San Francisco is one of my all-time favorite destinations with a GT kiddo, but Paris or London is also an amazing and rich environment.
