For a fun story about a PG child (and parent), do yourself a favour and read "The Last Samurai" by Helen DeWitt.

I've never read a novel before that gets it so spot on! I love this book and it is now my favourite book of all time.

ETA: not many of my friends understood the book. I found the way it is written to be refreshingly unique.
