I'm considering a 3-week CTY summer program - basically summer day camp for reading and writing - for my 3rd grader. It's pretty spendy, but we are willing to pay if it will be a good experience. Has anyone tried the camps? Are they worth it? My son tested high on SCAT language, and he likes creative writing with his writing tutor (something we've invested in during the school year), but he doesn't yearn for more academics and would probably play Legos all day if it were entirely up to him. He also has said, explicitly, he wants to be "in the middle", he doesn't want to be the best he can be, etc., and he sort of tunnels under his capability. He goes to a very mediocre school, especially in math, but he didn't qualify in math so that's moot.

I'm wondering if a program like this, with other smart kids and with a program that asks more of him than his school does, if it would open him up to wanting to do all he can, or if it would just be a lesson in frustration. I know no-one knows my kid and can't answer this last question, but if you have any info on CTY summer programs for kids this young, I'd love to hear about it.
