My dds have their own computer. It is in the office along with my computer and my husband's computer so an adult is almost always in the room or nearby when one of the girls in on the computer. We put shortcuts on the desktop to the websites that the girls frequent. I haven't found that the kids stumble upon inappropriate websites. I just worry about them when they do internet searches so I ask my dd8 to let me know when she googles something.
This is a safe search engine that my dd's school uses.
http://nettrekker.com/ This is a game that my dd played on the Disney website that teaches kids about internet safety.
http://disney.go.com/surfswell/My dd knows that she is not allowed on sites like MySpace. I also don't allow her to have an email account. Too much inappropriate spam is send to email accounts. I don't feel there is any way to allow a child to have an email account that is not filtered by a responsible adult.
