Woohoo! That's great news. My ds would choose the science center over anything athletic 10 times out of 10, but we've just started mixed martial arts. He's more into this than anything else we've tried, but he gets bored with things very quickly. I'll have to tell him about your son! Thanks for sharing.

Congrats to your son! My 13 yo is also into karate, and I find it an excellent sport for kids who are not necessarily athletically talented. DS played football, soccer, baseball, and basketball, and also tried gymnastics, but he was always struggling to be average. In karate, he is not the best student in the class, but he is progressing well, gaining control and mastering forms quickly.

That's awesome! We are a mixed martial art family, and it has been great for all of us! Martial arts are often a good activity for kids who aren't as active or as skilled in athletics since there isn't a sense of competition for the most part.

    ((great big grin))
I'm so pleased. He actually seems to have a talent for this! (or maybe they have a great system for making everyone feel like a winner - imagine that!)

That's wonderful! Congratulations to Grinity's son! I can imagine how excited you are for your son! My DS also hates most forms of physical activity because of his gross motor co-ordination issues, but he loves karate. He is still a white belt, but he really enjoys it.

DS13 just took his first 'belt test' last night and now he is no longer a white belt. DH was just against Karate for personal reasons, and it took me this long to 'put my foot down' and let DS start.
I had a little tear in my eye when DS took off his belt and had the next level placed on him. DS hates all forms of physical activity, so getting to this landmark is a really big deal.

    That is great, congratulations! smile

We had a similar situation with my DS12 - he never wanted to do sports, especially team sports, but when we said he had to do something physical he picked karate. He went four or five belts up and spent 4 years doing it - it was a great experience and got him over that "I hate sports" phase. This year he stopped karate and is doing a team sport for the first time!
