I have 1st grade twins who were recently assessed using the PIAT and I don't know what the results mean other than that I was told they did very well and they were accepted into a magnet program. I know what stanines and percentile are. Specifically, I don't know what the 129, 133, 140, and 141 mean or are equivalent to. Any help or insight is appreciated. Here are the results:

    Son
    o Reading 140 Stanine 9 99th percentile

    o Math 141 Stanine 9 99th percentile

    Daughter
    o Reading 129 Stanine 9 97th percentile

    o Math 133 Stanine 9 99th percentile

It's not equivalent to anything, unfortunately. From what I'm reading the PIAT is an achievement test meant to help diagnose learning disabilities... seems odd they'd use that as a magnet screener.

If you are wanting an IQ score for them, you'll likely need to have them evaluated privately with the Weschler, Stanford-Binet or Woodcock Johnson tests.

I wasn't hoping for an IQ, more for a grade equivalency or something along those lines. I think the numbers might be raw or standard scores, so I'd perhaps like to know the age or grade when those scores are 50th percentile? This wasn't the only assessment given. They also used OLSATs and classroom performance, but my daughter did poorly on the non-verbal section of the OLSAT, and my son doesn't write well, so they used the PIAT as an additional measure, which makes no sense to me for my son since neither of the tests has anything to do with writing! I tend to think my kids are more precocious and bright as opposed to actually gifted, but they certainly aren't getting what they need in the regular classroom.
