I just had a conversation with a mother, whose son is in 8th grade at Hunter, well known, established gifted school. She is an electrical engineer by training. She said the math instruction is ridiculous -- although they claim to be a year ahead and gave me some examples. They do quadratic equations, by guessing -- never taught them long division or polynomials. This parent had a conversation with the teacher about it so it wasn't just her lack of knowledge or misreading the textbook.

I know they were doing Everyday math or Chicago math, but the younger ones moved to Singapore math just this year. I know there are a lot of problems with Everyday math and conversion to doing "real" math, you have to drop much of their techniques. But this seems rather ridiculous.
