I knew someone in college who described exams as a funnel-emptying process: she'd stuff as much knowledge as possible into the funnel in the week before the exam, while keeping her finger on the opening at the bottom. When it was time to take the test, she'd let go and allow all the information to spill out into the exam booklet.
