It's been awhile since I've posted. Since then I've started a state advocacy group, www.lagifted.org and gotten a "Decision of Law" from my state in support of allowing any subject a student needs in his/her IEP! Yes, I've been a busy, busy mom smile

So on to the current pressing issues... We have our new IEP meeting after the holidays. We will be discussing adding Science to my DS7s current IEP. I need research on how it is appropriate to add science to a student's IEP and how it might look. Any help would be so appreciated!!!!

Yippee!! Momma Bear! Good for you!
Are you wanting subject acceleration, an online class, to allow the child to work on materials you send in, a small group to work together with a Gifted Coordinator, or individual time with the GC?

What type of Science does your DS7 like? A lot of the middle school text books like like great overviews of various science topics to me.

Do you want DS to be doing something hands on? Learning more about how the world works? Learning the history of Scientist and Scientific Ideas?

    Best Wishes,
    Grinity

I'd love hands on stuff that he's interested in, higher level thinking, project based ect. We were originally offered for him to do powerpoint presentations each week on the topic covered in class which is so not what we are looking for.

So we are looking for research that supports having compacting, accelerating, independent research ect. Any research anyone knows of would be much appreciated smile

Well, just got word that there will be 7 people from the district at our IEP. From the Assistant Superintendent down to his regular ed teacher.

Seriously, they need 7 people to represent the district? A bit of an overkill, don't you think?

FWIW, we've gotten more done when they bring more people so long as we are prepared. That's because decision makers are there. Now we may have been fortunate. It did take three years and many meetings, but now we get things done at the IEPs.

JBDad & Master of none - I never thought of it that way. It's just so frustrating to have to deal with yet another meeting with explanations of what we want, when in our state it's a matter of law. The law says you must do A + B to equal C. Not... only do A when you feel like it and B, well, forget about that and just for fun lets make it equal D this time. Ugh!

And it's not like we bring lawyers or anything, it's just us and my big binder of documentation. Hahaha, I'm huge on documenting everything!

Hey at least it's not 13 like Dottie. Wow! Wish me luck and if anyone out there has any research about science and gifted students, pass it on. I like to be over prepared!
