Hi my name is Liz and my DH and I just found out that our 5 year old kindergartner is gifted. They had her take the IQ test in November and this past Thursday we learned the results. She will now be placing her in 1st grade starting next week.

The fact that they wanted to accelerate her was not surprising the fact that they wanted to do it 2 days after we found out the results was the shocking part. They said she does not need kindergarten and she's really need a bit of a challenge because she's very bored.

They also told us that she's capable of doing 3 or 4 grade work and reads at an adult level.

My DH and I are still processing everything and trying our best to deal with it.

We had some idea. She was able to write her name before she was 3 and read right before she turned 4. She loves to do multiplications. So we knew she was smart but we didn't realize how smart.

Welcome to our world! The fact that your school is being proactive is an awesome sign.

    Welcome, Liz.

You think you are shell-shocked now! Just wait. We were approached by our son's school to have him skip kindy just a few days before the start of the school year (he was about a month shy of five).

I'm glad your school is working proactively for your child.

I've not seen anyone suggest "A Nation Deceived," which I think is excellent reading parents in your shoes, especially if you have any concerns (or curiosity) about the skip.

    "A Nation Deceived"
    http://www.nationdeceived.org/

There's an executive summary for the proverbial wetting of the feet: (http://www.accelerationinstitute.org/Nation_Deceived/Executive_Summary.aspx), and then -- if so inclined -- you can plow into the full report for all the gory details.

Lastly, there's a wonderful article, "What a Child Doesn't Learn."
    Opening quote:
    Quote
If during the first five or six years of school, a child earns good grades and high praise without having to make much effort, what are all the things he doesnt learn that most children learn by third grade?
