I'm sure this has been a topic before. I'll try a search as well but figured it wouldn't hurt to start a new thread. Could all you experienced parents help me with some resources for a fellow homeschooler with an 11 y/o with suspected dyslexia? The child is not identified as 2E but was assessed by a speech therapist about a year ago, diagnosed with a language and auditory processing disorder. The SLP said she wasn't qualified to diagnose dyslexia but that's what she thought he looked like.

The parents have been unable to implement the recommendations from the speech eval due to losing insurance and having limited finances. The SLP had recommended speech therapy, Wilson reading program and Fast ForWord.

Any advice, recommendations or suggestions for this homeschooling parent? We're in IL. Thanks in advance!

My best suggestion... Check out the special needs board on the WTM. There are tons of discussions about resources, ways to make programs more affordable and quite a few very experienced Mom's who have been teaching kids with dyslexia, some even mulitple children with it, for some time. It is one of the most active homeschool boards on the net and a wonderful resource for special needs.

    Hi doodlebug,
A number of parents have tried the Barton method to teach decoding skills. It is based on the Orton Gillingham approach as is Wilson. http://www.bartonreading.com/

For fluency training, you can try Read Naturally. http://www.readnaturally.com/

As far as Fast Forward - the research is a bit sketchy about how well it actually works. Plus, it is designed to address only some aspects of APD and or dyslexia.

The Scottish Rite centers run by the Masons also offer excellent OG tutoring. Not sure if there is a center by you: http://www.childrenslearningcenters.org/

You might also post at http://millermom.proboards.com/index.cgi? There are a number of members that have children with dyslexia and some that home school.
