Yes by all means 'Doing the next right thing' seems like a good idea.
I think you handled the band thing well. Our town also has non-school related band/orchestra - have you looked outside the school for musical opportunities?
I'm sorry your friend passed. It's hard to go on after that. Is there any way to try and make friends with parents from the gifted class? Does your dd13 do social activities with kids from her class? I was able to met several of my son's friend's parents while driving them to and from the mall.
Another possibility is to look for social contact in groups. Think 'Quantity over Quality.' Are you comfortable at NAMI meetings? Is there some other group, religious or interest related that you could try affiliating with?
