I'm trying to figure out something about the percentile results on the CTY SCAT test. For example, say a 3rd grader scores in the 85th percentile on a section. This just shows their percentile vs. the other talent search participants, correct? Is there any way to find out what their percentile would be vs. the 5th graders who would normally take the test?

Dottie is correct. Unfortunately, the bar charts aren't going to give you the precise percentile that your child achieved. They do list the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles (if I recall correctly), and if you pore over the bar charts with a magnifying glass you might be able to get a somewhat more precise percentile. HOWEVER, the bar charts show the scores for the PREVIOUS year's talent search participants, so while the charts can probably give you a reasonable approximation, they aren't going to tell you exactly where your child ranked among this year's test takers.

The bottom line is that the SCAT is such a short test and covers such a limited range, that it's probably not useful for getting a super-precise read on where your child ranks among his or her peers.

And yes, you do need the score interpretation guide (or whatever they call it) that you receive in the mail.
