OK so we watch the nature channel...maybe too much....
the kids were catching lightening bugs tonight and "chalking" them (using sidewalk chalk to color them) so they would be able to track if they caught them more then once. Of course sadly to say some died during "chalking"........
Ahhhh I guess ...all in the interest of science?

We were learning about armadillos today, and I told dd3 that they lived in our area, so she suggested we catch one. ("Catch one?", I asked. "You know. So we can put it in a cage and study it.") Oh, dear. So I'll take chalking bugs any day. In fact, I love that idea and am stealing it. Perhaps gentle dabs of paint w/ a li'l brush would, ah, decrease the mortality rate? (Hmm... would be interesting to do with the spiders we find in our house and put outside. Do they return or do they learn their place? ;))

just curious... once colored did they glow with a blue tint if colored with blue chalk?

    That's too funny.

I just asked and was told that they did not chalk the lightening part they "dotted" the wings with the chalk. They did succeed in recapturing one and it's wings were bluish.

Well it is Day 2 of the Lightening Bug Tracking Program. We successfully recaptured bugs with blue wings that had been tagged last night. :-)
