Thought this was kind of neat... especially for those of you (me) who like statistics.

That's pretty cool! While I'm not shocked at all, but still disappointed, that NM sucks... frown

Wow. Our class (a school for people with behavioral/emotional disabilities) is a great example of a twice exceptional classroom! Most of us (including my friends) scored at about a tenth grade level, and that's just in English! (I didn't do that well in Mathematics, though! ^^")

Thanks. US News does that report on the best high schools in the country; I wish they would publish a list on the best gifted schools in the country.

You and me both Wren. We are considering a major move... might be to Florida, might be to California, might be somewhere completely different. It would be nice to have a list of possibles based on schools!

I love this idea Wren. Have you written to ask them for this?

Here is a quick way to find HS with lots of GT kids - just look for the schools that have a high number of National Merit Finalists.

By definition, < .5% of the student taking the test are National Merit making these kids 1 out of 200 taking the test. By total age group, these kids are 1 out of 1000 or so. That makes them in the top .1 percentile.

    1. Pick the city.
    2. Find the list of private and public schools.
    3. Find out the number of national merit scholars for the last three years.
    4. Divide by the student body count for those three years.

There are a handful of schools that have > 25% of the student body as National Merit. Many of the top public HS will be around the 10% mark.

From there, you need to look at the school rankings statewide in specific programs, ie music, technology, theater, language arts, etc.

Here is a list. The numbers are close, but differ from what the schools reported for the year. Some schools had higher numbers that those at the bottom but are not on the list. That is why you need to look at the local news media or web sites.

It is interesting to note that many of the schools listed as "top" schools have < 10% as National Merit while there are some not on the list that have > 25%. I know of two schools not on the list have > 30%

Austin, you mean I should do more work??? No easy button? ha. J/K. If we seriously decide to move (just really in the idea stages), I appreciate the tip!

Thanks Austin, But it would be great also to note, what percentage. I would love DD to go to Styvescant though their 96 out of approx 750 compares to 56 out of 200 for Hunter.

I did not go back to get the exact numbers so if I made a mistake, I am estimating......

But I have the general idea.

When DH commented that 26 kids got into Harvard last year, I checked the percentages because Hunter had always sent 10% to Harvard, then it dropped to 7.5%. But the percentage was better. Either way, they are great schools. Another one in NYC to look at is NEST. Definitely up and comer.

Sorry, didn't read the notes to me when I posted above. I should write them. I wouldn't be me if I didn't make it happen.
