99th as compared to 8th graders?! Geez, that's going to be one empty awards ceremony!

I think you are mistaken, it's 99% of her peers, and with those scores if she's not in the top 1% i would be shocked

Congrats gatorgirl. I agree with colorpro--the % Duke uses will compare to other talented 5th graders not the 8th/9th graders.

TIP gives awards to kids with 99th percentile composites, compared with 8th grade norms. My DD has gotten this award in the past. IIRC, there were 250 or so kids in the TIP region who were recognized that year.

The curve for the talent search kids is to the right of the "average" 8th/9th grade curves. So, the talent search pool is very impressive. Or, as my DD said, it doesn't say much about the average 8th grader.

Wow! The scores that everyone is posting are outstanding. DD12 opened her envelope last night and was disappointed with hers. I, however am not. She improved from last year and that was what I was hoping would happen.
We still have not gotten anywhere with the school on any accelerated Math and although her Math is the lowest, I still believe that it is because she has not been exposed to anything other than 6th grade Math and that is so ridiculously easy. I am just hoping that some other opportunities open up for her along the way.
