Just as a timely link, I just saw this article posted on some other list serv this week and it refers to how many boys don't show true ability on timed tests compared to girls. We did the SCAT this year for DS (3rd grade), and not the EXPLORE just because I thought my own kid would not be strongest. He did very well on the SCAT, but I suspect not as well as he could have. He was in and out in half the time on both sections.

Congrats to everyone on their scores! Look forward to trying this next year!

And both of my dds do much worse on timed tests. Their processing speed scores were avg on the WISC, though. I wonder if they stratified the data by overall ability. I'd be curious to see if the correlation btwn slower processing speed and gender is the same when you are only looking at one tail of the bell curve (either tail).

Oh no doubt. smile I just thought it was an interesting link that might be relevant to us or someone else out there! My DS actually seems better at this kind of thing than I ever did based on the SCAT (and I am female), so I'm not even sure I can categorize him this way yet! It'd actually be interesting to see more data on that link - like average processing speed of boys vs. girls.

I'm personally just amazed not so much at the ability of the kids, as the ability of some of these kids to get down what they know on paper in a short amount of time at such a young age!

I want to thank everyone for the feedback, it's been very helpful.

Does anyone know how the awards Ceremony for Numats works? What does it take to get invited?

When do they usually hold it?

    Thanks

Funny enough, I was just putting together a list of resources for interpreting talent search tests/awards levels/etc. NUMATS sets the bar pretty high! Their 2008 awards ceremony score criteria are here: http://www.ctd.northwestern.edu/docs/ctd/acscorecriteria2009.pdf
    I don't think that they've posted 2010 info yet.

NUMATS has no 3rd grade awards ceremony -- that starts in 4th.
