    Hi all,

My DS is demonstrating his different perspective on things in his math homework - and getting marked wrong; without explanation.

Latest example: he has to colour 2/5 of a pie chart so instead of just colouring 2 of the 5 segments, he colours half each of 4 of the segments. It isn't what they are asking for but it isn't wrong either.

He does have a tendancy to overcomplicate simple tasks and has always been one to get the easy questions wrong yet do well on tougher questions.

I'm wondering if it may be an indication of lack of challenge? (This is year 5 maths by the way smirk )

    thanks for reading

Do you have a typo in your post? If he's coloring half of each of 4 segments, that's not 2/5. Even if he's coloring half of 5 segments, that's not 2/5.

Even though DS7 is working above Grade level, we still get these silly things sometimes. I think the easier the task, the more likely mishaps on both my DS's and his teacher's part happen. At our school assistants often do the actual marking. As long as the teacher knows where my kid's level is, then I don't worry.

My DS5 got marked off last year in kindergarten for a problem that gave a number with blanks before and after and asked him to write one less and one more. He wrote them in descending order rather than ascending and the teacher thought that was wrong. The question didn't specify the order, just that you needed to write one less and one more. Sure, order may have been implied, but was he being tested on interpreting directions or on math? The same could be said for this boy.

I should not read these tiny monitors so early in the morning, and especially before I had my coffee! I misread it, you & OP's son are correct.

Sounds like a gifted kid to me!
If he understands the concept that 4/10 = 2/5, then he's found a very creative solution to the problem. Maybe he needs to explain it to his teacher, because he shouldn't be marked off IMHO.

My DD had something similar happen to her in math recently, and she proved to the teacher that she was right. Unfortunately for him, it was in front of the whole class blush

Thanks all - it's fun trying to stay in tune to his brain. I have set-up a

Last night, after invstigating Force and Motion in school he asked me "Why did Newton wonder?".

    Great question.

That's a really nice example of gt children seeing things different way.

It makes me wonder what his teacher said about it. Did she understand or did she make him redo it?
