    Hello,
I was doing some research on GC and anxiety during lunch and I cam across this message board. I've been the Davidson web-site numerous times before, but I had always missed the message board part.

My DS is 5.5 and is in K. We had long suspected he was gifted and this summer his psychologist confirmed this. She had recommended testing, so we could get a better understanding of where he was on the gifted scale. We went for the initial in-take appointment for testing, and then my insurance denied the claim to continue to the testing, we are currently trying to get that decision overturned.

My DS's school does not offer gifted testing or gifted programs. So we are on our own to make his education work for him.

DS has told us he "hates" school and that it is too easy. Recently he has started having anxiety attacks (over non-related things) right before bed... only on school nights. He is having difficulties sleeping and staying asleep. Obviously something needs to change.

We have a meeting w/ his guidance consoler tomorrow and have signed a release allowing his psychologist to speak to her about him.

My head is spinning and right now I am looking for company of people going through similar things.

    Hi Kate,
Welcome! So glad you found us.

I hope that your insurance comes around, but to be honest, schools don't seem overly impressed with IQ or achievement tests, even when they give them themselves! (Our school doesn't offer gifted testing, but when they look for learning disabilities they end up doing the IQ and achievement test, just the same.)

Definitly stress the 'social emotional' angle, as schools nowadays seem much more intersested in this sort of growth than in academic advancement. It is as though if the child is at gradelevel then they have no more responsibility. OTOH, if you son is saying that he hates school, having trouble sleeping and having anxiety attacks, they will often be very sympathetic. Don't try to 'be strong' - show as much emotional (in a non-blaming way) as you can muster. Obviously this is very upsetting.

How do you feel about asking for a gradeskip right off the bat. I doubt that that will be your ultimate answer to everything, but it's a great place to start if homeschooling or an alternative school that 'gets' gifted isn't availible.

    best wishes,
    grinity
