I obviously have too much time on my hands as I'm mulling this over.

For children who have grade-skipped and are in a gifted program at school - ie. a fast-paced, high output, highly enriched learning environment - what happens next?

Would you try to find a high-school that has a specific 'gifted' program so they can continue to learn in a similar way and be exposed to this enriched environment?

Or is the grade-skip enough and should they be able to just slip into a general learning environment covering regular curriculum?

    What do you think?

    thanks

I believe that for high ability kids (or at least my kids), a single grade skip "takes the edge off". It helps. It is not the complete solution--but I have yet to find that. Even with the skip, they should be allowed to subject accelerate where they need it. Plus involvement in special projects, competitions, etc. are very helpful in keeping them engaged/enriched.

How many years was she skipped?
I ask because I always puzzle a bit at the idea that a single year grade skip makes a huge difference by the end middle or high school that being a year younger even matters.

I certainly don't want to be one to step on anyone's dreams, but I haven't met many people in life who wish they'd spent more time in middle school. It tends to be a dreary godawful part of life and if there is ever a time to skip that'd be it in my book. To be more encouraging though... There is always the possibility of doing a gap year between high school and college.
